Aromatherapy

Caring for a terminally ill loved one can often be stressful and emotionally draining. Essential oils are being used to promote the well-being of patients and family members, as well as ease discomfort by way of aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is "the practice of using natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance psychological and physical well-being"(www.aromatherapy.com).

There has been a growing base of research and support on the benefits of essential oils and the positive effect they can have on patients and caregivers. Health issues such as nausea, fatigue, anxiety, and depression are common symptoms people with terminal illnesses may experience. Aromatherapy can ease discomfort and improve well-being physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Here are some simple oils and combinations of oils to reduce symptoms. To achieve the desired effect, just simply add a few drops of one oil or a combination of oils into a diffuser or a pot of hot water. Do not apply the oil directly to your skin (www.aromatherapy.com).
